What are your blood pressure numbers trying to tell you?
Your blood pressure numbers reveal important information about your blood pressure—but what exactly do those numbers mean?
Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) and is shown as two numbers, such as 139/89 mm Hg. The top number represents your blood pressure when your heart is contracting, and is called systolic pressure. The bottom number represents the pressure between beats when the heart is relaxed, and is called diastolic pressure.
Blood pressure varies during the day in response to a number of factors.
That's why blood pressure readings should be taken at the same time each day. It's a good idea to get a blood pressure monitor so you can
check your blood pressure at home.
If you have any unusual readings, talk to your healthcare professional.
