What Is High Blood Pressure?

What is high blood pressure?

As blood flows through your body, it puts pressure on the walls of your blood vessels. This is similar to the water pressure inside of a garden hose. When water flows through a hose, it applies outward pressure to the surrounding wall. This pressure will rise if the amount of water is increased or the diameter of the hose is decreased.

The same concept applies to your blood vessels. Blood pressure is created by the force of the blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as it circulates and the force of the arteries as they resist the blood flow.

When the force of your blood going through your blood vessels is too great, it's called high blood pressure. Hypertension, or chronic high blood pressure, can be dangerous because it forces the heart to work too hard, and it can damage blood vessels. This can lead to serious health problems like heart attack and stroke.* Nearly 40 percent of people who are being treated for high blood pressure do not have it under control.
